Stefan Rating is one of the two heads of the firm´s Competition law practice.

Areas of expertise:

He is an expert in the field of Life Sciences and Telecoms. He has extensive expertise in the following matters:

  • Merger control before the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) and /or the European Commission
  • Investigations of restrictive horizontal and/or vertical agreements
  • Leniency applications and surprise inspections (“dawn raids”)
  • Abuse of dominant position or unfair conduct
  • Agreements on i.a. procurement, outsourcing, tolling, exclusive distribution, selective distribution, franchises
  • Compliance programmes
  • Damages claims following Competition law infringements

Prior to returning to private practice, Stefan worked at the European Commission for 14 years, i.a. as special assistant to the Director-General in DG Competition. He was also a spokesman for Commissioner Van Miert; and a Member of the European Commission’s Legal Service.

Ranked by Chambers & Partners as a top lawyer in the area of Competition law (Band 5). Best lawyers® also recognises him in the fields of Competition law/Antitrust and Administrative law. Academic Background:

PhD in Law. He is a dual qualified lawyer, Rechtsanwalt in Germany (Frankfurt/Main) and Abogado in Spain (Barcelona).
Spanish correspondent of Oxford Competition Law since 2013. Member of the team of commentators of European Competition Law, Nomos (current eds. Schröter/Jakob/Klotz/Mederer) since 1997. Co-author of EC Competition Rules in National Courts: Spain (with E. Navarro), Nomos, 1999. Former Lecturer at University of Barcelona and former President of the Belgian-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce in Barcelona (CCBLB). LEAD Fellow.
